all weekend you have been clearing one of the bomb shelters to store firewood. you're running out. it is difficult to haul and chop wood and stack wood with your hand damaged. you need to build a new building to work in. you spend all your time trying to catch up. downstairs they are trying to study. you look out at the yellow and brown leaves of the sycamore. this is the tree that has damaged the foundations of this house. you found the roots growing through the footings in under the floor in the children's room. of course it has sucked the water out of the clay and caused the building to subside. every few years the man from springer hardware would climb up on a ladder and hack off some branches, until he got too old. he mutilated the tree. he left the crown congested and vulnerable to disease
