PALAOA
Name: PALAOA at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI)
Location:
Details:
PALAOA stands for Perennial Acoustic Observatory in the Antarctic Ocean. However, Palao is also the Hawaiian word for whale.. The small research container is unmanned and located not far from the Neumayer Station on the ice shelf of Atka Bay in the Antarctic.
Nearly complete darkness prevails in the Antarctic winter.. PALAO, however, does not depend on visibility conditions and records year round, 24 hours a day, what goes on in the water under the ice shelf. Scientists can not only hear the voices of marine dwellers - whistling Weddell seals, clicking killer whales as well as the rare and little-researched Ross seal - the animals themselves are constantly surrounded by noises: ice floes rub against each other and drift across the ocean, large pieces of the ice shelf tumble with a thunderous crash into the water and yearly the Polarstern sails past to bring supplies to the Neumayer Station..
The data stream is transmitted via wireless LAN from PALAOA to the Neumayer Base.. and from there by permanent satellite link .. to the AWI..
More than 15000 km lie between Antarctica and the institute in Germany. Due to the limited bandwith of the satellite link, jamming of the WLAN link due to storms, or energy shortage, the connection might temporarily be down or scrammed. In this case, please dial in later!

Puako, Hawaii

Location: Puako, Hawaii

Details:
Live transmission of humpback whale song sung by the males in their Hawaii winter breeding ground. The whales have migrated down from their northern summer feeding grounds to their winter grounds to give birth, nurse and breed.
They sing elaborate 4 part songs with each part looping repeatedly in a sequence that is evolved by the group through the season. Whale song has been important in advocating for whale conservation. As such it exemplifies the process of bringing non-humans into the collective, as described by Bruno Latour.
Its functions for the whales are not clear.
