BROWN NOTEBOOK
09:43 24–11–2021 TO 22–02–2022

what do you study? what do you try to learn? to make useful objects, it used to be, you tried to make a fine finished object that people would admire. nowadays, your study and what you try to do is to make some kinds of unfinished objects – unresolved and needing to work – in the hope somebody can take and adapt them and put them to use, you think that's what you're always doing
think of the ontological hysterical theater – how Richard Foreman made all those text[s] available – without further ado – for ppl to do (some)thing(s) with

      09:56
you reached to put your notebook in your pocket but you weren't

wearing any trousers. your mind is a messy patch, you think. well, composting is the metonymn of these times, you think, with M. Puig de la Bella Casa – go out in the air. put that bird seed in a bowel [bowl]. you can do the application later. p is in clinic – and soon in Tanzania. you will need to look after things with S and S. it's cold. you put on a heavy sweater.

you're in trouble now. you're lying on your back – really down. every time you have to write one of these applications dispirit overtakes you. slowly creeping up it finally overwhelms you. dark and cold is your environment – plane flying over. slowly in the cold moving here and there – parasitic on the earth.

you think of those cave salamanders by the lake Cerniza – living in suspended animation, Grégoire said – they do not reach the last stage of metamorphosis – they retain their gills – like tadpoles – indefinitely. these animals impress you by their patient endurance – all incomplete – that book is sitting on the desk – all the time you are writing an application – over and over – with an uncertain outcome. if it succeeds, you think – that application – the burden imposed on the earth will be increased. tirdeness weighs and talking tires you. ppl are planning their projects. p leaves tomorrow for Nairobi to develop a project. S is planning to go to Glasgow to study. christmas sits ahead provoking unease a year ahead. the present is evacuated. you missed CD's performance. time turns futilely without grip

you're lying on your back. rain is falling across the roof – dispersed staccato sounds at different un-tuned pitches – different size dots with slight blur. the snow fell in The French Dispatch – before the police arrive – different sizes and depths of flakes differently lit – almost as if animated and conversely: not animated – an enactment of an exemplary plurality – no 2 snowflakes are the same, we're told. is it true? they don't seem the same falling – they are not the same – is it a statement about logic and identity? weariness with old logics – that protester jumped out the window – although Wes Anderson shows the

old respect – he leaves them with some dignity, it seems – face to face with young with their smooth faces so full of juice – you went with sasha. some of what the character Zefirelli wrote was illegible due, you both noted, to what that journalist called: bad penmanship. it was cold. police. trains working on the track by the junction, making long hoots. you heard one on the camberwell stream before you left – long, with a sound of air escaping – almost breathy – resonating off architectures or the some other way: tailing off with a long decay. rain on the roof windows. P arrived in dar es salaam last night. she's staying at the Courtyard Hotel. you imagine her in the garden there – some approximation: pierre is hear [sic] – covered in rain. why

do you write about what you write about, the anchorman asks the james baldwin character – xx a question you must never ask somebody: 'why' is the response. I will answer your question, the james baldwin character says – out of weariness.   a motorcycle is heard passing, out in the rain – which is heard as afinehiss now, if at all

you watch a q and a on dafilm with Kazuhiro Sodā. of everything Sodā says is right. Sodā's working method – following the 10 rules (commandments) of method

he developed or derived from his – – this working method is everything you would want for your own method. at the same time it is the opposite of your actual method – mired in applications – the very opposite of the freedom Sodā values – after working all that time for TV. at the end Sodā is asked about the films he likes. he mentions 2 films. the director of those films turns out to be the director of the film: Letter – a film you saw – one of those films you see and cannot find again, and, youalways think: that film is the most extraordinary film youhaveever seen. It is by Sergei Loznitsa.

on 10 MAR 2021 you lear[n] that Georgia Sagri had been on hunger strike for 10 days, in solidarity with hunger striker and prisoner Dimitris Koufontinas.
'Bodies, in the simple, sincere and genuine nature of their practice, are inherently present in the meaning of self-governance and self-determination. They are the crucial elements of artistic

practice as well as of the political act.
'My own participation in this struggle aims to put my body next to a human who turns his body into the ultimate weapon against authoritarianism and inhumane state violence. As Dimitris Koufontinas is between life and death I choose to end my hunger strike so that I can now meet with everyone else still fighting in the streets against against this government's arbitrariness.'

you went to a demo at Brixton prison. after standing at you stood by the entrance beating pots and pans. s played the melodica. p hit a big steel soup pot with a rubber mallet.

hkw hit a small saucepan with a wooden spoon. you made a recording 2 ex-prisoners made speeches, hten somebody from Unite made a speech. after a while, somebody with an amplifier on wheels led the group off around the perimeter of the prisonaan following along its hight smooth brick walls. a block of flats faces the prison across a road along one wall. people could be seen through the lighted windows or on the balconies or the fire escape, watching the group of protesters walking chanting, carrying a long banner and a small sign. you came to an area with tall gates clad in corrugated steel sheet. everybody started to xx kick the gagtes, making a xxxxx loud clangs. the gates were push-

ed open – it seems they were not chained shut. you entered a yard with gravel on the ground, facing a further wall, with the prison building rising above on the other side. the yard concentrated the sound. more people arrived. it got louder. you started to see people at the windows and hear them making sounds back – shouting or beating on the window bars. after a while some prison security arrived and told you to leave the yard. they locked the gate and stood in front of it. you heard about this demo from hkw, who was told about it by the jester from COP26, who came on As if radio.. it was called by Prisoner Solidarity Network, London.

planes fly over the house in a continuous series. the sounds of the planes are not steady or predictable. as one is ending, the next one begins. each engine has a different modulation as it drives the plane forward – from high to low. th[] high sounds recall steel turbine[] or circular saws. the low sounds recall drill bits. a sense of biting into the air in flight. then the sound of impacts being dispersing in long rolling waves.
the house sits in partial

darkness – orange, black, grey.

when history is a cold floor sucking the warmth from your bones
some houses have a deadly feel to them – you can't put your finger on what it is
somehting mis-shapen about them – your eye can't rest anywhere without moving away   even if you imagine stripping everything away to the bare structure – you're thinking – something will remain that is oppressive to the inhabitants – even to somebody passing through   not to talk about people growing up in this ugly house. you d have to destroy this hous[], you think. the person next door has abandoned their

own identical adjoining house, which is actually built as a mirror of this house and continuous with it. unable to destroy it, you think, they abandoned it. all you can do is try to pass through time in it. it does not assist the passage of time. it weighs heavily, with its wood and tiles, its locks and cold floors. maybe it contains memories of summer days but you come to doubt it. despite all the glasses in the cupboard and the steps leading to the sea, and the big dishes, it does not feel like a convivial place. it oppresses you and you[r] spirits sink and can't rise. all you can imagine is to get out of it when the light

returns. at the same time, because you can't point to obvious flaws in the house, exc-ept its ugliness and coldness, you can be accused of exagerating about this house it can also be said the problem with staying in this house must be to do with you. look at all those other guests enjoying this house by the sea in every season. actually you can hear that said already. it is one of the worst things about this house – for you. somehow shutting down any response, it leaves you more alone than before you came. it does not shelter you from the cold – it exposes you to cold and noise. the warmth of the house, if you turn the thermostat to 2+ and sit in all you[r] clothes, is deceptive. the

wide tiled floor[s] are so cold they suck the warmth out through your feet even if you wear thick socks. the cold travels up your legs. the air source heat pump is roaring. and traffic passes less frequently on the road as the night continues. the sun is beneath the earth – far away. when it comes there will be a period of feint light ..around theblurred pines. in time it will come up over the sea and warmth will reach you. you will go out and turn in it – slightly one way and another with your eye[s] closed like in a shower.

you re lying on your side. you hear a constant sound of like distant tractors or a smoother machinic hum. you know there's no external sound like that here. you're high in the Els Ports mountains in an old house. the night is dark and cold with bright stars. you were also hearing constant sounds – hums, drones, grinding in other places, including other quiet places. you think you are hearing a mix of your self-noise and the feint resonance of different places, activated by distant xx sounds or a collection of small dispersed sounds. you're going back to London tomorrow by train from Barcelona. you set an alarm for 4

you're moving forward swiftly – as in acts of translation, acts of passage. inside the train – lights, coat hooks – long windows – you re in a heightened state of security\sanitation. do not leave your contaminated belongings —they will be destroyed. not blunted by repetition, at each stop the same announcement is announced – the voice is tight, high, slightly constricted. it works its way through 3 languages, hesitating from time to time, garbling a passage, producing drivel – moist distorted sounds – the speaker

re-gathers themselves then and proceeds withthe announcement as if no – it re-establishes the flow.
the land gets greener – the light brown fields are flushed with light green shoots
the almonds were flowering in La Sénia! not yet up higher – blossoms held in the air – ramified – to insects – al with dark xxx stems and branches — well — you've come down from the mou around Boixar – dark crystalline sky – vivid barks and forms – all spread out in sharp revealing light. cold air blew over ev and through hollows and crests of the ground as / where it rose and fell
in the film: bricks by harun fareshi, we see the way machines are introduced into the brick production process – their movements

have an unsettling quality: they have the memory of human movements, but they do not pause or vary in the work they do. this means, from the outset, that the people working with them also cannot pause or vary. from the ouset the people are seen feeding the machines, bringing them shredded clay. in some cases the machines work semi-autonomously: the single controller is visibly at a loss, xx with nothing to do for the camera. in another sequence, a tester strikes extruded roofing tiles with a metal object: some of them sound wrong, we gather: they are thrown into a bin. everything is covered in snow or ice[s] – the branches of the trees – in that passag stretch back there – now you are in a long tunnel of compressing the air in your

ears.
the beginning and the end of the film show self-organised building projects with lots of people involved. sometimes they sing as they work or beat the ground . mxx to compact a floor
coming down from boixar, appearing in Barcelona Sants, you see the organisation of the station's work   its services and infrastructures quite clearly before you: the orange jackets of the assistants mathcing the facia of ticket machines and barriers. you entre through the security apparatus. at the same time you are fresh and partly formed, smelling of woodsmoke. you experience the flows afresh. gradually – the train, passing through vast monocultures of the central

plains, snapped in ice, in monochrome – the intensities of the bounded state bore into you, along iwth the semi-sickness from motion – sky without depth – the sounds of transit fill your ears and bones and the void spaces of the body – the traveller bodies as they shoot forward
you re travelling north. you pass out of the ice storm to green and dun fields fringed with dark bare trees in strips and patches.

you had some time to listen to different places — a river valley, a high pine forests, a room at night, a room in the morning – the only light coming in small bright lozenges through slpits and knot-holes in the shutters.

there was no glass in the openings. after the fire burned out, the house returned to near the outside temperature. the floors were stone cold.

[actually, you tried to cross a river in bare feet. you had to turn back. the water seemed to attack you[r] feet, taking them in an agonizing grip. you cried out in pa suffering and you ha went back to the bank. there you sat, patting your hurting feet in the bright sunlight]

came from the cat rescue. the exposure of animals to each other across differences of ways of life, rates of life – really what is that like. not knowing anything about death you were holding that rabbit, feeling for its warmth or breath or beating – well, the weight of a rabbit is some thing – neither light nor heavy – a rabbit sadness inhabits and will be played out   p said the rabbit maybe died of the causes of age – the rabbit showed no signs of age visible to you. hkw used to care for those rabbits. they would chew your shoelaces. some times they didn't go in. the went in the chicken coop. all the animals you couldn't keep – from failures of care –

feeling like a recall and a rehearsal of kinds. but feeling more like a diminishing, a closing. kinds of openness come to us unchosen really – well, that surplus – the weight of a rabbit – quite quiet animals, sometimes you could hear them on the stream at night. breathing hoarsely
you're tired your eyes are closing. P is asleep pierre is scratching at the chair downstairs. S is asleep. M is sleeping maybe in the Hague. S sent a whatsapp gn from Swansea. the night extends. you put the rabbit in a box in the shed. P suggested to put it in S's room to be sure. P is a doctor. something irreducible that belief rebounds from ‐ th rain starts falling.

it started raining in paris on the football. it rained most of the day here. the moorlands allotments were muddy and – the soil slick grey. Mbape ran between 2 defenders and kicked the ball through the goalkeeper's legs, all in the steady rain. D was in a white T shirt in Aix. DD was in a white shirt in Oxford. MS was in a red shirt at E+C. he's going to Paris later in the year. the AC advisors set some deadlines for reporting, for us to work to. you're tired here. P's colleague. P said she was tired. she wanted to retire. that farmer too. to slip from the world before you re wrenched from it   it's quite dark quite quiet – not really either. O's mother

died, he said. he postponed speaking. with D and xxx S was 24 on monday. D is expecting to give birth in March. S feeds Pierre very small pieces of cheese. you can hear pierre down stairs attacking the sofa. pierre is unpredictable. he doesn't submit to expectations. that is his gift. xxxxxxxxx that rabbit oc[c]upied a l space, you thought, neither light nor heavy it didn't like to be lifted up. when it dug it came back out of the soil. it existed in the region of the soil surface, breathing in and out. one time it had impaired vision and it moved its head awkwardly to see. that impairment passed. its eye seemed

and soft. you closed it with a thumb but the lid opened again partly. it was dark already outside. it was hard to judge how what it was you
   you r[] really tired now
    you re falling asleep

the storm is blowing hard: cracking branches shaking the top of the house. the microphones overloadclip from time to time. birds singing brightly. open sky. planes over. roaring and twigs crackling. the chicken makes a warbling call. the timber of the enclosure creaks. birds are still flying – diving through patches of air the way a swimmer breaks waves. hard high sheets of sound. sense of materials on verge of

breaking. concern \ elation
